What is Low Strain Pile Integrity Test? 

In general, Pile Integrity refers to certain characteristics of deep foundations and piles such as:

  • Physical Dimensions of Pile (Length or Cross-Section);
  • Continuity of Pile (presence of Voids or Major Cracks); and
  • Consistency of the Pile Material.

Certain problems during the construction process can affect integrity of these elements: poor management of slurry, steel reinforcement installation issues, and poor concrete quality or concreting. These problems can result in defects, which in turn would negatively impact the structural integrity and mechanical properties of the piles and deep foundations.

Low strain pile integrity test (or PIT) is a non-destructive test (NDT) method that can be used for the purpose of QC/QA in new constructions, and condition assessment of piles and caissons in existing structures. PIT is standardized  as ASTM D5882, “Standard Test Method for Low Strain Impact Integrity Testing of Deep Foundations“.  The test provides a cost-effective and easy way to assess the integrity of piles, however, there are certain practical limitations to the test. Pile Inspectors and geotechnical engineers involved in the review and analysis of the test results should develop a deep understanding about the underlying concept of wave propagation, signal processing, soil-concrete friction (impedance) in order to accurately pin-point pile defects that fall within the capabilities of this interesting technology.
