Non-Destructive Evaluation of Concrete Defects – CASE STUDIES

June 17, 2020 | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EST
By: Dr. Farid Moradi, PEng

In this webinar, we will present several case studies where non-destructive testing and evaluation was used to assess the existing condition of concrete structures:

  • Evaluation of cracks in concrete beams
  • Strength-related issues: How to verify strength of concrete?
  • Evaluation of voids underneath concrete slab-on-grades
  • Assessment of Cracks in Concrete Walls (Cold Joints, Structural Cracks)
  • Quality Control and Quality Assurance of Concrete Piles

Nondestructive Evaluation of Cracks in Concrete Beams

Duration: 6 mins

In this article, and presentation, we are going to describe using non-destructive evaluation of cracking in concrete beams. The main reasons behind cracking is discussed. A systematic approach for evaluating the current condition of the beam is presented.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Certain features of concrete cracks, such as the crack width and crack depth are measured using NDT methods.

๐Ÿ‘‰ GPR scan is used to determine structural detailing of beam, such as the location and spacing of stirrups, as well as cover thickness.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity is used to assess concrete crack depth, whereas Ultrasonic Pulse Echo is used to determine the overall thickness of the element from on-side only.

๐Ÿ‘‰Finally, rebound hammer test (Schmidt hammer) was used to verify uniformity and concrete strength.

Non-Destructive Testing for Structural Evaluation and Condition Assessment

Duration: 60 mins

This webinar aims to showcase the applications of non-destructive testing for evaluation of various structural systems. Moreover, it is designed to show how NDT/NDE can enhance the art and science of structural condition assessment. It will cover topics on:

โœ”๏ธ Why Non-Destructive Test ?

โœ”๏ธ Applications of Non-Destructive Testing for Structural Evaluation

โœ”๏ธ Review of Canadian Case Studies (Bridges, Dams, Power Plants, Mines, Condos, Parking garages, etc).

Different NDT methods are presented and discussed. The objective is to show how engineers can utilize NDT methods for in-place estimating of concrete strength, evaluation of concrete cracks and voids through advanced concrete imaging and scanning. Moreover, we discuss how NDT methods can help study corrosion activity in concrete structures. The following non-destructive testing testing solutions are presented and discussed:

โœ”๏ธ Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity – UPV

โœ”๏ธ Rebound Hammer – Schmidt Hammer

โœ”๏ธ Ultrasonic Tomography

โœ”๏ธ Ground Penetrating Radar – GPR

โœ”๏ธ UPV for Crack Depth Measurement

โœ”๏ธ Half-Cell Corrosion Potential Mapping

โœ”๏ธ Corrosion Rate Measurement

โœ”๏ธ Surface Electrical Resistivity Test

Moreover, a few of Canadian Case Studies are presented and discussed: (Bridges, Dams, Power Plants, Mines, Condos, Parking garages, etc). The webinar is presented by Dr. Hamed Layssi , CEO and Co-Founder at FPrimeC Solutions Inc.ย
